Joy and compassion, best medicine.
The title today is the power of the invisible. The virus is a predator. It has its inner quality. The life of the predator is to find a place to attack, find a place to live. Reality and response to a predator is to shut the windows and shut everything down and to live in fear that predators are coming your way. If you see on the internet, see how the reporting has been done, a little bit here in this country. A little bit here in this country. It strikes this fear, this reality fear. Is it coming my way? When is it going to strike? I just don’t know when this invisible predator is coming my way.
Yes, you can wash our hands. Taking your temperatures daily. Stay social isolated with this predator. But where is this predator? We just don’t know. It is so easy to feel so overwhelmed. What is the goal of this predator? It has its way.
I remember Master Lin teaching me a Chinese character for the word depression. It was translated into 100 loves lost. The purpose of the predator is to have us fall out of love and many things. Move away from the true meaning of life — love.
The emotion is feeling overwhelmed. It has two parts. Overwhelmed is one of the first responses. Sadness, anger, grief. Change of life. Depression, anxiety. Feeling all of these things. And all these happen all at once. I am losing the way of life. It’s one side of feeling overwhelmed. But the other side I want to mention more than anything else is — there is another way of feeling overwhelmed. How do you feel overwhelmed by happy? How do you feel overwhelmed by joy? Joy is happiness for no reason at all.
Is there a way to feel overwhelmed by joy, overwhelmed by happy? It depends on what you pay attention to. If you could pay more attention to every single story of kindness, of love, of compassion. And bring that vibration into you, then you will be overwhelmed by this feeling of joy.
I have to work this morning. I switch all my work into working all by myself and doing things. As therapist, have a lot of phone contacts with people. Listening to the radio, coming into work, I heard this story about this 7 years old young boy who has birthday party. His mother had to cancel it. Instead she contacted all the neighbors. Then all the neighbors got together at certain time. She put out a sign at the front yard. Mom and the boy took a walk in the neighborhood. Every time when they reach one house, the neighbor would come out and clapped, and said, “Happy birthday! Happy birthday!” Instead of having a cancelled overwhelmed party, they had a joyous party.
Now that might be difficult to duplicate. But I want to record that vibration of neighbors coming out and being so happy. And the little boy sure must for sure be happy, different than a cake, candles, and presents open. It’s a memory that he will remember forever.
How can you find more and more stories, more and more those loving kind stories? Going out the sense of predator coming down the street. Now let the predator went out. Finding ways if you are overwhelmed by joy. Overwhelmed by stories. Overwhelmed by happiness. Your role is to pay attention to it. To seek it out. To hold that vibration in you. Not, “Oh, that’s nice, but…” Now you are back to be overwhelmed by the predator.
If you want to be overwhelmed by joy, Overwhelmed by compassion. Down the street half a block away from my office, there is always a gentleman at the corner begging for money. If I end up paying $5 or $6 a day for the different guy at different time of the day, that’s a sign of generosity. I talked with one of the guys days ago. I asked how things worked because there was no traffic. He said, “Probably the $2 you gave me today will be the only money I make all week or all day.” I am sure president Trump is not going to supply more businessman who sits at the corner everyday with $1,000 having his business come back to life. But it is an act of our compassion how I recognize even in my small world the things I can do in a compassion way. If I want to overflow my compassion, I tell two guys who have business, “We can make a trip to give these guys a dollar or two a time in order to make up what is going on.”
Overwhelmed by compassion. Overwhelmed by joy. What do you have to come back to when the predator is in the community? What are your resource tools? What is the memory?
Sometimes we may feel, “I don’t want to betray something if I am happy.” There is no reason if I am happy, I don’t want to be doing something wrong. That’s the target of the predator. The predator doesn’t want you to be happy. The predator doesn’t want you to have compassion. The predator wants to take over. So, you have to come back to get things, vibrations come back to.
How do you think the healthcare providers survive? They don’t think about their survival. They think about their purpose is to heal. They work as much as they can, the joy they have to heal, the joy to work with each other in order to help other people. They are being overwhelmed by compassion to help to heal the other people. They claim for all sorts of equipment not because of their complaining. No, so that they can be overwhelmed by compassion. They request out of compassion, not out of greed.
Being overwhelmed by hearing these stories. Being overwhelmed by seeking out stories. If you have a choice to watch something on your TV, watch a live stream event. Feel the liveness of the presenter, not the movie that has kind of not the deadness to it, but the emptiness to it.
Find a way to connect yourself to this vibration to be overwhelmed with joy, overwhelmed with happiness.
